Curriculum Introduction
:

CSL-A1: The entry level Chinese class for no-heritage student will focus on phonetics
(PinYin) and basic Chinese character writing based on understanding of radical
and character formation mechanism. Students will learn some simple sentences
and have opportunities to apply these sentences in conversation, simple essay
writing as well as presentation projects. After each lesson, student will be
required to finish some homework, which will be graded by TA during the following class.
The homework can be directly assigned from the workbook or some assigned projects.
Students will also have opportunities to celebrate traditional Chinese
holidays, learn Chinese calligraphy using writting brush, learn to sing a Chinese song,
and recite a few famous traditional poems. After the first year study, students
should be able to recognize ~200 Chinese commonly used characters, capable to write
~100 characters, and manage to have simple conversation and write simple essays to
introduce themselves and their family. To achieve these goals, student will be
required to try their best to attend all the lessons, to actively participate class activities
including reading, writing and speaking, and to finish assigned homework.
